Things are improving but we have a long way to go as far as educating people about the effects of driving drunk. People drive after drinking b/c they do not consider the consequences. Bartenders and servers have to be the ones thinking about this when they serve alcohol to their customers.

I have been in New Mexico alot lately and i would have to say they are really doing alot to curb drunk driving at some of the local hotspots in Albuquerque.  Hats off to Ghrahm Central Dance club where they now use the electronic driver license scanners and also do a head count at the door as people pay.  You could just tell that people were not getting completely wasted in there and the environment is fun without major intoxication.  NM has had a bad rap for a few years but I really think the government is stepping up to the plate to make the roads safer for everyone.  Good job NEW MEXICO.  Rachel Gibson

Did anybody catch Tyra Bank’s show today?  She did a great job showing the effects of alcohol.  She took 6 friends in their 20’s and gave them a night of drinking.  All but one of them thought they were ok to drive after the drinks they had, but when the cop did the breath test on them, every single one failed the test!  One guy was even double the legal limit and he thought he was completely sober.  Here is a pic of the cop doing the test on the show.

“Do you know your limits? How many people know when they’ve had too much to drink, but still get behind the wheel? That was the question Tyra posed to six guests who agreed to get together and drink as they normally would on a typical night out. At the end of the evening their sobriety was tested by Chris Swanberg, a California Highway Patrol officer, to gauge how drunk they were versus how intoxicated they thought they were. Tim had eight drinks that night, and before his sobriety tests with Officer Swanberg, he said he didn’t feel the effects of the alcohol he’d consumed (6 beers, 1 glass of wine and 2 shots.) The “Breathalyzer” determined Tim’s blood alcohol was .15, nearly twice the legal limit in California of .08. Tim admitted he still didn’t know his limit. Nikki usually limits herself to two drinks a night and was the only one that tested below the legal blood alcohol limit, even though the officer told her the alcohol level could rise over time. Charnelle tried to “pace” herself, enjoying a drink every 30 to 45 minutes. After her tests, the officer told her she would be arrested for DUI. Peter averaged two drinks and had his own sobriety ritual. He kept bottled water in his car to splash in his face during the drive home to keep him coherent. I wonder if he ever thought about drinking some of that water to dilute some of the alcohol he drank? Jaime enjoyed six cocktails though the course of her evening out. An hour after the first drink, all of the participants felt confident in their ability to drive themselves home. Jaime said the expertise of a bartender makes it easier to drink more because they’ve figured out how to add more alcohol to the drinks without making it too strong. Jim had three drinks and tested just above the legal limit. After three and a half hours of “usual” drinking, all but one of the participatns felt comfortable to drive. Nikki, unlike her fellow participants, confessed she’d never gotten behind the wheel of a car when she felt “out of control” from her drinking, saying she called a friend for a ride.
